Willow Burn Hospice treasures the lives of people whose illnesses are no longer curable, enabling them to achieve the best quality of life. Our local hospice services provide a friendly and supportive environment in which everyone feels welcome.
Our aim is to control symptoms, relieve physical and emotional distress, embrace and support both the patient and their carers, whilst maintaining independence. The usual period of admission is 7 to 14 days. Although we do not provide any long term care, we will provide care, comfort and compassion at the end of life, if that is the wish.
All of Willow Burn Hospice services are delivered free of charge

What is Palliative Care?
Palliative care is the active holistic care of patients with advanced progressive disease which is not responsive to curative treatment. Management of pain and other symptoms and the provision of psychological, social and spiritual support is paramount. The goal of palliative care is achievement of the best quality of life for patients and their families.
The Hospice Movement
The history of the modern hospice can be traced back to when Cicely Saunders founded St Christopher's Hospice in South London in 1967. Hospice care is palliative care given to individuals who have a life limiting illness. It is multi professional in nature, providing the services of doctors, nurses, social workers, physical, speech or occupational therapists, clergy or other spiritual guides, health care assistants and volunteers.
End of life care
Willow Burn Hospice aims to support people approaching the end of their life to live as well as possible until they die. We promote patient choice in the delivery of end of life care services through the provision of both Inpatient care, Day Hospice and Home Therapy services.
Although traditionally focused on cancer, Willow Burn Hospice is increasingly offering services to people with other conditions e.g. Motor Neurone Disease, End Stage Heart Failure and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
